Jake is the creator of Skate and Bake, a local sesh that incorporates his passions for skateboarding and educating the local community.
Candid Chronicle: Can you give me some background information on yourself?
Jake: I’m a North County local, I grew up around the area, went to Carlsbad High School, and found cannabis when I was around 16. It just became a passion of mine. From there, my interest in cannabis grew and so did they industry, and I wanted to grow with it.
CC: How has medical marijuana changed your life?
J: I do construction all day, 40 hours a week, I have done that for the past 15 years, and when I go home my body is in so much pain, I’m under mental stress constantly, and medical marijuana has contributed so much as far as pain management and helping me concentrate better on things that need to be done.
CC: So, your interests growing up were skating and cannabis?
J: Exactly, I was a skater, I always skated and medicated, and I figured it was time to get the two together in this industry. I started doing the San Diego Cannabis Farmer’s Market, and that went so well that we decided to take it further and do Skate and Bake.
CC: There’s really nobody else doing a sesh like this. For people that haven’t been to Skate and Bake, what’s it like?
J: It’s more than people coming and getting stoned. I was a skateboarder and I know a lot of skateboarders medicate just like me. A lot of it involves pain management, a lot of athletes nowadays are starting to come out about it. We are tending to this theme within the industry. Our events help a lot with up and coming businesses, to get their name out there. LA has suge a huge population of cannabis users, and we do too, but we let people come out and be more loose about the subject.
CC: Do you have a lot of kids that are stoked on skate events that want to come to a Skate and Bake?
J: We haven’t had anyone underage try to get in, but I do get asked sometimes if they can come. Unfortunately if they’re under 18, they can’t get it. We’re working on doing a non-medicated and medicated are next time.
CC: What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen at an event?
J: It seems like every time we do an event, it’s a combination of the heat and maybe someone who doesn’t have as high of a tolerance, everybody is giving out dabs at every booth, if you haven’t dabbed before it can be pretty intense, so it seems like everytime someone faints from dabs. Thank god that’s the worst situation we’ve ever had. Other than that, the cities that we’re in have caused more concern than everyone else, they’re the hardest to work with.
CC: So is Skate and Bake underneath any organization?
J: We’ve come up with Green So Cal Productions, which is behind Skate and Bake and some other future events that are to come.
CC: I saw on Green So Cal Production’s website that you guys have worked with the band, LOOM. Are you planning on doing future shows with them?
J: LOOM? Yeah, a few of the band mates are skateboarders, and one of our partners is their photographer. They came out and did an awesome job, we were really impressed with them. Ocelot also came out, both of them were at Skate and Bake in Vista and were amazing.
CC:  What keeps you going with these events?
J: I’m really goal oriented in this industry. I’ve been around it most of my life, it’s a passion of mine. The patients and the vendors that come out play a big part in our success, so helpful, cooperative, respectful, it just keeps me going. Seeing patients have access to things they haven’t before, maybe they haven’t seen before, to have them come be educated on the proper ways to use cannabis gives me a good feeling.
