In modern western society where the world is increasingly technologically oriented it seems that people are being isolated from one another more and more. Even as we are becoming more connected by the internet. It is important to foster and give attention to people and communities in our local world, as well as virtual realities. Here are some suggestions for making new connections in your community and reducing feelings of loneliness.
Spend Time In Places With Lots of People
After work, instead of watching television, go to the coffee shop, park, bookstore, or anywhere where people gather. Read a book or get some work done on your laptop there. Be open and friendly to people in your surroundings. Practice small talk and starting conversations with strangers.
Join a Local Group or Club
Follow your interests such as a book club, runners club, or activities club. Get out of your comfort zone and engage in the activities you enjoy with others.
Start Conversations With Strangers
Even if it does not lead to exchanging emails, phone numbers, or Facebook accounts, it is good practice to make conversations with strangers. It will open your mind, and relax you, not to mention help you feel more connected to the people you live with in your city.
Make An Effort To Foster Existing Relationships
Don’t let friends or new acquaintances fall by the wayside. Make an effort, reach out and meet up! See a movie, go for a walk, hang out a new or fun spot in town. Keep new and old connections alive and bring friends of like interests together to increase the sense of community and friendship.
Keeping friendships and community alive takes effort and energy. The juice is worth the squeeze. The relationships we foster in real time decrease anxiety, depression, and loneliness and are vital to our well-being.
