Thanksgiving is a holiday meant not only to bring together families but to bolster national pride. A holiday crafted around a myth that Native Americans and Pilgrims had amicable relations. In reality, Pilgrims stole land from, enslaved, and murdered Native Americans.
As people prepared their Thanksgiving holiday across the country, people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, South Dakota were sprayed with rubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas, and non-lethal projectiles. Women and children have been hurt. Peaceful protesters, self-proclaimed Water Protectors are aiming to defend their sacred burial lands, their water supply, and protect land from environmental disaster. Other forms of violence against the Water Protectors includes the use of concussion grenades, Long Range Acoustic Devices, and water cannons in below freezing temperatures.
The violence against protestors in Standing Rock has been ongoing, and lead by security factions of Dakota Access, LLC, the owners of DAPL. The Dakota Access Pipeline is an oil pipeline that is set to be delivered in January 2017 and is meant to transport crude oil from North Dakota to Illinois.
